Optimizing For Local Traffic – Foot Traffic That Is

There are many bricks and mortar businesses that develop an online presence as part of their general marketing strategies. Since many people are now turning to the internet to find specific businesses before the leave home, this is becoming a sound business practice. However, are you truly optimized to get that local traffic.

We talk so much about increasing the traffic to a website, however, for a bricks and mortar business, the traffic they want is foot traffic, that is, people walking through their doors. This can be fairly straight forward for a business that has the one shop front. Create a web site, get listed in the local directories and for local search and you should see a steady flow of visitors to your website. Make that attractive and the traffic may flow through your doors.

If your business has several different locations then the task is not so straightforward – but it’s not hard either. All you need to do is create a separate page or pages for each location. Rather than submitting your website to the various directories and local search engines, submit each page to the directory related to that location. For example, if you have a second storefront located in Glasgow, then create a page for that storefront. Submit that page to directories related to the Glasgow region.

Over time, each page will show up as a listing for that particular town or region and should rank highly in the search engines for searched made using your keywords and that town or region. If you have ten shop fronts, then create ten pages – even if several of these shop fronts are in the same town. Optimize each page and, if multiple submissions are permitted, submit each page to the local directory.

To a certain extent local businesses are proving easier to optimize for in the search engines since the number of sites competing for similar keywords is greatly reduced. In fact, for some keywords you may have little to no competition from your area.

Optimizing and submitting individual pages to local directories rather than websites can be a quick and easy way to increase online traffic and over time, increase the traffic through your doors. All you have to do then is make the sale.
