When Should You Consider Dedicated Hosting?

Most web sited owners, businesses included, start life using shared hosting. You may have heard of dedicated hosting and wondered what the difference is and whether or not it is right for you. When should you move to dedicated hosting?

First, let’s look at the difference between shared and dedicated. As the name suggests, shared hosting means the computer that hosts your web site also hosts many others. A dedicated server means you basically ‘rent’ a computer that will only host your websites.

You will start to know when your shared hosting is not coping when you receive complaints of slow load times, frequent outages and perhaps even hack attacks. The problem with shared hosting is most often felt when one or more websites on the one server become popular. If you can image your desktop PC hosting 10-20 websites and one or two of those are receiving a million hits per month, the whole system starts to break down under the pressure.

A dedicated server removes the effect that other web sites may have on your web sites. To say there are no more bottlenecks is not quite true. If your dedicated hosting plan is too small for your traffic then you will still be causing your own bottlenecks. However, select the right plan and you can avoid those problems.

For many businesses, the best time to get dedicated hosting is from day one. In fact, if you are serious about your online presence, and you hope to grow to a million or so page views per month, getting a dedicated server from day one is almost a must.

With dedicated hosting you can also install the components you really want including the operating system and control panel interface. With shared hosting, you share an IP address – this can be an issue if the provider has an open door policy and there are porn and spam sites with the same IP address. With dedicated hosting you get your own dedicated IP address. A dedicated server appears to be SEO friendlier as well – perhaps due in part to the IP address issues.

The downside to dedicated hosting? It is far more expensive than shared hosting. However, for a business with a large online presence, the extra cost could be a saving in the long run when you consider how many sales you may lose due to system outages, and the problems you may have when the host insists you are now causing to much of a drain on the system and is constantly suspending your site.

Dedicated hosting provides a lot more security and far less issues over time compared to shared. If you are considering an online business – look first at your dedicated hosting options.
